Behind the lens.

I’m Derrick, a photographer based in Austin, TX, drawn to the raw, unscripted moments that make up everyday life. My work lives at the intersection of street and documentary photography — finding the quiet in-between moments on a busy sidewalk, or the honesty in someone’s expression before realizing the camera is there. For me, photography has always been less about the perfect shot and more about paying attention to the world around you.

I shoot because I believe every person and every street corner has a story worth telling. Whether I’m wandering through a neighborhood with no particular destination or sitting across from someone long enough to earn a real moment, I’m chasing that feeling of genuine connection — close distances, quiet attention. The city is always talking — I’m just trying to listen.

I also shoot a little differently than most. I work with fixed-lens point-and-shoot cameras — no swapping lenses, no hauling a bag of gear. It’s not the traditional setup, and that’s the point: staying small, quick, and unobtrusive lets me stay inside the moment instead of fussing with equipment. The camera matters far less than the eye behind it, and I’ll pull amazing frames out of the simple kit I carry.
